List of One Piece episodes (seasons 9–14) |
The twelfth season of the One Pieceanime series was directed by Hiroaki Miyamoto and produced by Toei Animation.[1] It contains a single story arc, called 'Nyōgashima'(女ヶ島, lit. 'Maiden Island'),[2] which mainly adapts material from the 53rd and 54th volumes of Eiichiro Oda's One Piecemanga, following the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates after they are scattered across the world by Bartholomew Kuma. Focusing on Luffy, the first 10 episodes depict his stay on Amazon Lilly, an island that is inhabited solely by the Kuja, a tribe of women warriors, and ruled by their leader, the 'Pirate Empress' Boa Hancock, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea. The remaining 4 episodes give insight into the fates of Luffy's crew, while he travels to Impel Down, the world's largest prison, to save his brother, Portgas D. Ace, from execution.
The season initially ran from July 5 through October 11, 2009 on Fuji Television in Japan.[3][4] The first two DVD compilations were released on April 6, 2011.[5][6] The last two volumes were released on May 11, 2011.[7][8] In Video Research's audience measurements in the Kantō region, these initial airings received household ratings ranging from 8.6 to 12.0, which earned every episode a place in Video Research's weekly Top 10 ranking of anime shows. The North American licensor of the series, Funimation, streamed the whole season's episodes subtitled in English for free on their website. Episodes 408 to 414 were streamed from the August 26 through the 28, 2009. On August 29, 2009, the rest of the season's episodes, starting from episode 415 onwards, were streamed as a simulcast, only one hour after they aired on Fuji Television in Japan.[9]

408 | 'Landing! The All-Female Island, Amazon Lily' Transcription: 'Jōriku! Danshi Kinsei no Shima Amazon Rirī' (Japanese: 上陸! 男子禁制の島アマゾン·リリー) | July 5, 2009[3]
Three days have passed since the incident at Sabaody Archipelago. Having been hit by Kuma, Luffy is teleported to an unknown island. Searching for food, he comes across some unknown mushrooms, and eat them. Unfortunately, these mushrooms are 'mushrooms-growing-on-body-mushrooms', and as Luffy goes to sleep, mushrooms start growing on his body. He is discovered by a trio of amazon women who take him to their city in order to cure him, but during the cleaning process, it's discovered that Luffy, unlike everyone else on the island, is a man.
409 | 'Hurry Back to Your Friends! The Maiden Island Adventure' Transcription: 'Isoge! Nakama no Moto e – Nyōgashima no Bōken' (Japanese: 急げ! 仲間のもとへ 女ヶ島の冒険) | July 12, 2009[11]
Luffy realizes that the island's name is Amazon Lily, an island populated entirely by the Kuja tribe of women warriors that men are not permitted to set foot on. He wakes up in a cell and receives clothing from some of the women there, who have never seen a man before and have no knowledge of them. He inadvertently angers his captors and is forced to escape when they try to kill him, taking a woman named Margaret hostage in order to recover his Vivre Card. While Luffy learns about the island from Margaret, his pursuers become desperate to eliminate him before the Snake Princess, their leader, returns.
410 | 'Everyone Falls in Love! Pirate Empress Hancock' Transcription: 'Minna Meromero! Kaizoku Jotei Hankokku' (Japanese: みんなメロメロ! 海賊女帝ハンコック) | July 19, 2009[12]
Luffy resolves to leave the island, reunite with his crew and defeat the enemies who had overpowered them earlier, and decides to borrow a ship. Margaret then realizes that she cannot afford to be friendly with Luffy, and attacks him, forcing him to flee. A few kilometers from the island, Boa Hancock - the Snake Princess and one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea - meets with a Navy vessel commanded by Vice-Admiral Momonga, who informs her of Portgas D. Ace's upcoming execution and the likelihood of Whitebeard intervening. He orders her to join the fight against Whitebeard's forces or risk losing her status as a Warlord and having the treaty between Kuja and the World Government annulled. Hancock refuses and, using her Love-Love Fruit powers, turns his men to stone and leaves.
411 | 'The Secret Hidden on the Backs – Luffy and the Snake Princess Meet' Transcription: 'Senaka ni Kakusareta Himitsu – Sōgū Rufi to Hebihime' (Japanese: 背中に隠された秘密 遭遇ルフィと蛇姫) | August 2, 2009[13]
Hancock's ship reaches Amazon Lily and she returns to her palace. Nyon, a former ruler of the island, urges Hancock to answer the summons in order to keep the treaty that protects her people, but Hancock refuses and throws her out a window. Hancock goes to take a bath, and some of the villagers discuss a legend that states that Hancock and her sisters defeated a Gorgon, but received eyes that turn anyone who looks at them to stone. Luffy, searching for someone from whom he can borrow a ship, falls into the bath. He sees something on Hancock's back that surprises him, but does not turn him to stone.
412 | 'Heartless Judgment! Margaret is Turned to Stone!!' Transcription: 'Hijō no Sabaki! Ishi ni Sareta Māgaretto!!' (Japanese: 非情の裁き! 石にされたマーガレット!!) | August 9, 2009[14]
Luffy looks at Hancock's back and notes that he saw what was on it before. Hancock tries, but fails to turn him to stone with her powers when he mistakes her Love-Love abilities for Foxy's Slow-Slow Beam. Luffy tries to escape but gets captured by the Kuja pirates and is brought to the execution arena. Margaret confesses to bringing him to the island, and Hancock turns her and two of her companions to stone. Enraged at the Kuja's lack of empathy for Margaret, Luffy punches out Bakula, the panther sent to execute him. Hancock's two younger sisters, Sandersonia and Marigold, jump into the arena and using their Devil Fruit powers, transform into snake-women to fight Luffy.
413 | 'A Difficult Fight for Luffy! The Snake Sisters' Haki Power!!' Transcription: 'Rufi Daikusen! Hebi Shimai no Haki no Chikara!!' (Japanese: ルフィ第苦戦! ヘビ姉妹の覇気の力!!) | August 16, 2009[15]
Luffy gets the petrified Margaret and her friends to safety and then fights against Sandersonia and Marigold, but struggles against their Devil Fruit powers and their ability to predict his moves with 'Haki'. When Sandersonia plans on breaking the petrified Marguerite in order to cause Luffy pain, he screams for her to stop, forcing her to stop and causing many of the assembled warriors to faint by using a special and rare kind of Haki Hancock identifies as a Conqueror's Spirit. With Margaret safe, Luffy prepares to fight at full power.
414 | 'All-Out Special Power Battle!! Gum-Gum vs. Snake-Snake' Transcription: 'Nōryoku Zenkai Batoru!! Gomu Gomu vs. Hebi Hebi' (Japanese: 能力全開バトル!! ゴムゴムVSヘビヘビ) | August 23, 2009[16]
Luffy activates Gear Second and gains the upper hand. Desperate to finish him off, Marigold and Sandersonia attempt to finish him off with their strongest moves, but Luffy fights them off and ties their tails together. Marigold's fire attack accidentally burns the clothes off Sandersonia's back, prompting Hancock to order everyone to evacuate or risk seeing the 'Gorgon Eyes'. Luffy covers the symbol on her back with his body, saying that while she is his enemy, her secret has nothing to do with his fight. Boa Hancock is then moved to tears.
415 | 'Hancock's Confession – The Sisters' Abhorrent Past' Transcription: 'Hankokku no Kokuhaku – Shimai no Imawashiki Kako' (Japanese: ハンコックの告白 姉妹の忌まわしき過去) | August 30, 2009[17]
Sandersonia and Marigold concede defeat to Luffy, and Hancock agrees to grant Luffy the choice of getting a ship or saving Margaret, and he chooses the latter. Luffy is brought to the palace, where Hancock is shocked to learn of Luffy's attack on the World Noble. Luffy learns that the three sisters were once slaves of the World Nobles, but were freed when Fisher Tiger attacked Mariejois, and that he eventually founded the Sunny Pirates from former slaves. Hancock then grants Luffy use of her ship.
416 | 'Saving Ace! The Next Stop: the Great Prison!' Transcription: 'Ēsu o Sukue! Arata na Mokutekichi wa Daikangoku' (Japanese: エースを救え! 新たな目的地は大監獄) | September 6, 2009[18]
Following a party, Luffy learns from Nyon that Hancock is a Warlord of the Sea, and that they have been called together as the Navy is launching an all-out offensive on Whitebeard. When Luffy hears that they are planning on executing his brother Ace at Marinford to lure Whitebeard out, he decides to save him from the prison Impel Down before he's transported away. The only hope of him getting there in time is for Hancock to answer to the call for the Warlords so Luffy can hitch a ride on her ship, but the empress has just caught a disease, and is lying in bed.
417 | 'Love is a Hurricane! Hancock Madly in Love!' Transcription: 'Koi wa Harikēn! Meromero Hankokku' (Japanese: 恋はハリケーン! メロメロハンコック) | September 13, 2009[19]
Nyon discovers that Hancock's disease is the same one that killed her two predecessors, and has Hancock meet with Luffy. Luffy requests that Hancock take him to Impel Down, and when Hancock agrees, much to everyone's shock, Nyon realizes that she is in love with Luffy. Hancock boards Momonga's ship to answer the summons, smuggling Luffy aboard inside her clothes, and de-petrifies the crew before the ship sails to Impel Down. Elsewhere, Sengoku notes that Jimbei, one of the Seven Warlords, refuses to fight and is being held in Impel Down, and learns that the 23 ships observing Whitebeard's flagship have been destroyed. Garp visits Ace in prison.
418 | 'The Friends' Whereabouts – The Science of Weather and the Mechanical Island' Transcription: 'Nakama-tachi no Yukue – Tenkō no Kagaku to Karakurishima' (Japanese: 仲間達の行方 天候の科学とからくり島) | September 20, 2009[20]
Luffy proceeds to Impel Down, but worries about his friends. Nami finds herself on Weatheria, a sky island dedicated to the study of weather, and learns about a special rope that can create winds. She uses the rope with her Clima Tact to stop a storm. Franky ends up on the futuristic Mechanical Island, and is frozen solid in the cold. He is rescued but because there is no cola on the island, is given tea instead and becomes a gentleman.
419 | 'The Friends' Whereabouts! An Island of Giant Birds and a Pink Paradise!' Transcription: 'Nakama-tachi no Yukue – Kyōdori no Shima to Momoiro no Rakuen!' (Japanese: 仲間達の行方 巨鳥の島と桃色の楽園!) | September 27, 2009[21]
Chopper lands on an island known as Birdie Kingdom, and finds himself in the nest of two large birds who play with him before accidentally dropping him into the forest below. While searching for food to regain his strength, some residents of the island capture him. When they leave to shoo away the birds after an unsuccessful attempt at stealing their nest, Chopper escapes the pot and realizes that the birds rule the island. Sanji finds himself on Peachy Island, seemingly entirely populated by beautiful women, and someone named Elizabeth nurses him until he wakes up. He goes to Elizabeth's house to return a handkerchief, only to find that Elizabeth is actually a male transvestite, and begins desperately running when the island's residents attempt to get him to cross-dress.
420 | 'The Friends' Whereabouts – Bridging the Islands and Vicious Vegetations!' Transcription: 'Nakama-tachi no Yukue – Shima o Tsunagu Hashi to Shokujin Shokubutsu' (Japanese: 仲間達の行方 島をつなぐ橋と食人植物) | October 4, 2009[22]
Robin finds herself on Tequila Wolf, a snow-covered island. She is taken in by Soran, a young girl who works on the island as a slave, and tells her much about the outside world, which she pretends to visit by drawing pictures. Some soldiers break in to find Robin, smashing Soran's pictures in an attempt to determine her location, and Robin is captured. She learns that she is on an island full of prisoners and citizens of countries that refused to join the World Government, and that she and the others are being forced to build a bridge. Meanwhile, Usopp finds himself on Bowin Island, an island full of man-eating plants, with a man named Heracles.
421 | 'The Friends' Whereabouts! A Princess Negativity and the King of Demons!' Transcription: 'Nakama-tachi no Yukue – Negatibu Purinsesu to Akumaō' (Japanese: 仲間達の行方 ネガティブ王女と悪魔王) | October 11, 2009[4]
Zoro lands on the island where Kuma sent Perona. Perona treats his wounds, but forces him to stay while subjecting him to humiliating treatment. Brook finds himself in the Land of Poverty, where he is mistaken for Satan, whom the islanders had summoned for revenge against the Long-Arm tribe. Famous Marine officers gather at Marine Headquarters, as do the rest of the Shichibukai besides Hancock. In Impel Down, Ace begs Garp to kill him, but Garp says that even if he did, the war with Whitebeard cannot be avoided. |

Short SummaryEdit
During a battle with several Marine warships, the Straw Hat Pirates are forced to make an emergency Coup de Burst in order to escape a sudden attack from above, in the form of an immensely large cannonball. Crash landing on a nearby island, they decide to explore while Franky repairs and moves the ship. Finding a town, they learn of its past and people while Luffy befriends a nearby wax sculptor.
After being told that his apprentice had joined the Marines and subsequently been imprisoned due to knowing how to create incredibly solid wax, Luffy meets with the others and go out to find the apprentice. Leaving Sanji and Usopp to deal with the Marine troops, he eventually finds Regis trapped in a cage. Accidentally activating a complicated water trap, they are only saved by the timely intervention of Sanji. Escaping to a nearby reef, they decide to destroy Bilić's weapons once and for all.

Long SummaryEdit
During some spare time on the Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hats have a mock introductory show with Usopp hosting. Once Luffy's turn was done, they are interrupted by an attack from several Marine battleships. Defending themselves against the assault, a distant whistling sound alerts them on an incoming cannonball of immense size that threatens to crush them. Using the ship's Coup de Burst to escape the impeding impact, the crew are sent flying across the ocean while the unknown assailant looks on, revealing himself to be the commanding officer of the local Marine base.
Realizing they had overdone the Coup de Burst, the Straw Hats find themselves crash landing on a nearby island. While Franky works on a way to move the ship back into the water, the rest of the Straw Hats explore the local town to re-supply what was broken or lost in the landing. However they all notice that the town is in short supply of everything and that only women, children or the elderly run the shops. Eventually Brook, Robin and Nami discover the site of a past cannon attack located directly opposite the Marine base.
Meanwhile at the base, Bilić replays his plans to defeat any pirate that comes his way and prove the strength of his new weapon before being notified of the arrival of Captain Koby and Lieutenant Commander Helmeppo who had been sent in order to have Bilić sign some transfer papers from Marine Headquarters for Koby and Helmeppo to be stationed at his base which agitates the commodore, seeing it as them believing he is unable to defend the area from pirate attacks. Koby and Helmeppo overhear this outside his office and decide to have a look around the base - the real reason they have come is an investigation report against Bilíc.
Back on Hand Island, Luffy comes across what appears to be a fruit stall on the outskirts of the town. Trying to eat several pieces, he quickly discovers that they are actually fake fruits made of wax. From behind, an old man approaches and quickly bursts into laughter over Luffy's mistake, then introduces himself as Diego, the man who had sculpted the fruits. Going inside, Diego is suddenly left dumbstruck as the entirety of his home had been blown away except the front wall and, upon looking over the hill discovers that it was the Thousand Sunny which had caused the damage in its crash landing. Apologizing for the destruction they had caused, Luffy is then led underground where he discovers the pride of Diego's collection, a multitude of life-like wax sculptures of famous pirates.
Seeing the sculpture of Shanks, Luffy is reminded of his childhood and the days when Shanks and his crew had visited Foosha Village, which culminated with his consumption of the Gomu Gomu no Mi and a near lethal encounter with the mountain bandit Higuma where Shanks had sacrificed his arm to save Luffy, earning the boy's eternal respect and admiration. Returning to the present, Usopp and Chopper discover the underground section and marvel at the wax figures, leading Diego to show them how his particular wax was created. Noting a poorly crafted figure of Whitebeard on a nearby shelf, Diego mentions that the wax itself is of a much higher quality then the one he can create and demonstrates this by easily destroying his own wax by knocking the sculpture against it though notes that it is weak against fire. Asking who had created it, Diego admits that the man was no longer around and had left him to join the Marines. This is eventually revealed to be his son, Regis
Diego then explains the island's situation. Hand Island is an island of artisans that was once under the protection of Whitebeard. However, after he died in the Battle of Marineford, rival pirates quickly set their sights on his territory. Marines quickly stepped in and built a base nearby which restored peace. Eventually, during mid-construction, Bilic was put in command. He called for a meeting of the townspeople and asked that they help build a cannon to help ward off pirate attacks which the people happily agreed to. Among them was Regis, who had joined the Marines to help the island, much to the dismay of Diego, who had hoped he would follow in his footsteps. However, once the cannon was completed, Bilic fired on the town as 'practice', destroying several buildings and killing a few innocents as well. It soon became obvious that he just wanted the cannon for his own ends and used the families of the builders as his own hostages lest he fire the cannon on the rest of the town.
After telling this tale, Diego starts to head off to the Marine base to give Regis the Whitebeard figurine. But Luffy offers to go instead. Meanwhile at the Marine base, Koby and Helmeppo continue their investigation, noticing there's not enough food for all the workers. They also overhear a few Marines talking about Regis speaking out against Bilic. Regis is shown to have been thrown into a cage outside on a spinning wheel. Bilic tries to get him to apologize for going against him, but when Regis refuses, he has the wheel spun, which sends Regis underwater in its rotation, causing Koby to comment on such cruelty. Luffy regroups with his crew and tells them his intention. They draw lots to see who'll go with him with Sanji and Usopp chosen. The next day the three head for the Marine base on the Mini Merry.
As they do this, Koby heads to Hand Island and sees for himself the devastation and poor condition of the town, and is initially met with suspicion and hostility due to him wearing a full uniform. He eventually happens upon Diego and they talk with Diego eventually revealing Luffy was there recently. Koby reveals he knows Luffy and tells Diego of how Luffy freed him from the grasp of Alvida who was forcing him to be her cabin boy and gave him the confidence to join the Marines. Diego leads him down to his wax room and reveals Regis is his son, though Koby briefs him on his current state.
Back at the the Marine base, the Marines open fire once they notice Luffy forcing Sanji and him to invade the base which quickly leads into a chase. Eventually, the two find Regis and give him the figurine but Luffy is captured in a seastone cage once he steps on the platform where Regis's cell is. The wheel turns towards the water submerging the two. Sanji manages to jump in and free the pair and they escape into ocean via a sewer fan where they regroup with Usopp. The four rest on a reef where Regis explains he made the doll when he was six. When he went to join the Marines, Diego tried to at least have him take the figurine with him but he declined. Regis feels that he disappointed his father for not following the path he wanted. But after seeing the figure and being told that Diego always treasured it, he realizes that his father still believes in him. Likewise Diego, after being told why Regis was thrown in jail, is happy of his conviction to protect the island.
Now determined, Regis plans to head back to the Marine Base to destroy the cannon. At that moment, Bilic fires on the town, thinking the villagers are hiding the Straw Hats and demands they turn them over or he will destroy the town. Luffy's group head back to the base and make their way inside with Usopp and Sanji distracting the Marines while Luffy and Regis sneak in. Bilic, thinking the townspeople sent the Straw Hats after him, fires another cannon at the town but it's sliced in half by Zoro. As Zoro continues to defend the town from Bilic's cannon. Luffy and Regis make their way into the base and gather as much wax as they can. The Straw Hats fight against the Marines while Regis makes his way up to the cannon's barrel and activates the wax, causing it to backfire and destroy itself.
Bilic emerges from the rubble of the cannon, obviously angered. He burns Regis's Whitebeard figure to mock Luffy as well as him then reveals he has a mobile cannon as a back up. Luffy faces off against him, but suffers trouble due to the cannon's speed, the constant bombardment Bilic fires into his rubber body and the spinning tops fitted with blades sent after him. His crew (along with Koby) help take out the tops and Luffy finally manages to beat Bilic by getting in close enough to grab his snake puppet and pummel him with an Elephant Gatling, destroying his cannon in the process.
Kizaru suddenly shows up much to the shock of everyone. The Marines believe he was the one who stopped Bilic and cheer for him as the Straw Hats make a hasty exit. However it turns out the Kizaru is really another wax sculpture created by Diego who made it on the request of Koby. Using the charade (as well as Diego throwing his voice to imitate the Admiral), Koby places Bilic under arrest and states he is likely to be court martialed while declaring that it was never the Marines' intention to enslave the island. He orders the Marines to help rebuild the island while Diego and Regis reconcile. Koby watches the Straw Hats go, promising he'll catch up to Luffy soon to which Luffy, seemingly hearing this, laughs in agreement. However as the crew flees, they realize they accidentally left Zoro on Hand Island.
As the credits roll, we see the island returning to peace, Regis continuing his duty in the Marines and Diego putting the finishing touches on his latest wax creation: a wax sculpture of Monkey D. Luffy.
